Greenwich Art Society
Exhibit runs from: June 5 to June 30 2010
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 5, from 2 to 4 pm.
Dating back to 1912 and then known originally as The Greenwich Society of Artists, our founders and pioneer members included many distinguished artists and art patrons. Our first president was Edward Clark Potter, sculptor of the lions at the New York Public Library. Early members were Leonard Ochtman, Elmer MacRae, George Wharton Edwards, J. Alden Twachtman (son of John Henry Twachtman) and others associated with the famous Cos Cob School, several of them leaders in the American Impressionist movement.
The Greenwich Art Society assumed its present name in 1958 when it incorporated as a non-profit, tax-exempt organization and initiated year-round art classes with professional teachers for both children and adults. Today our Studio School offers students at all skill levels – beginner, intermediate and advanced – year-round classes in drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking. All classes (save those en plein air) take place in our fully equipped teaching studio on the third floor of the Senior/Arts Center on Greenwich Avenue.
Greenwich Art Society member/artists also have the opportunity to enter annual art exhibits in which we award cash prizes that we sponsor within the community. We have a gallery on the second floor of the Art Center for changing exhibitions of works by members, faculty, students and other selected artists. Our annual exhibitions are held in the following venues -- the Bendheim Gallery of the Greenwich Arts Council, the Flinn Gallery of the Greenwich Library, the Garden Education Center of Greenwich, and this year at the Audubon Greenwich. We also have individual artist exhibitions at local banks, the Nathaniel Witherell Home, and the Barnum Financial Group in Stamford.
The continuing mission of the Greenwich Art Society is to further education and stimulate interest in the visual arts through classes, exhibitions, lectures, demonstrations and gallery trips. The organization serves to promote the work of area artists and provide a cultural contribution to the community.
