The Sanctuaries of Audubon Greenwich
Mildred Caldwell Sanctuary of Walden Woods
Mildred Bedard Caldwell left this woodland to the local Audubon Greenwich chapter. The main trail at this 22-acre sanctuary crosses Strickland Brook by a boardwalk before leading into deciduous woodland that was farmland until about 1900. Remnants of farming activity include the stone enclosure known as Pugh’s Pig Pen. Two large stone boulders on the upland trail are “erratics” deposited by the glaciers that covered the area twelve thousand years ago. A trail leads directly into the 62 acre Montgomery Pinetum owned by the Town of Greenwich.
The entrance is on Bible Street, 100 yards south of the intersection of Bible Street and Cat Rock Road. Parking is by the side of the road on Bible Street.
