The Sanctuaries of Audubon Greenwich
Audubon Hemlock Gorge
This 37-acre parcel is the Center’s best-kept secret. There is no parking area or restroom. Parking is on the access road. Several miles of trails make exploration possible, although at present there is no trail map available. A hemlock forest covers over half of the property. The remainder is oak-beech-maple forest. It also features a beautiful stream with some deep pools. There are no open meadows here.
The sparkling western branch of the Byram River borders this 37-acre sanctuary. Two distinct types of forest provide a cool shady cover in summer months. Deciduous hardwoods grow on the western side of the property, while a lovely hemlock forest can be found to the east. Spring wildflowers flourish here, and hikes may see evidence of great-horned owls and river otters in the winter.
The sanctuaries of Audubon Greenwich are open from dawn to dusk.
Please help us preserve them by observing our rules:
take only photos, leave only footprints,
keep on the trails, leave bikes and pets at home.
Do not disturb the animals. Do not pick plants or wildflowers.
