In celebration of this new exhibition, Joel Oppenheimer will comment on John James Audubon as a watercolor artist in the field and Professor Robert A. Askins, Ph.D. will speak on ‘The Prospect for Birds in the Eastern Deciduous Forest’. Dr. Askins is nationally recognized for his research of the ecology of migratory birds and the impact of forest fragmentation on bird populations. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Bring your family to learn how to host bird families in your yard by adding bird nest boxes. With consumer demand increasing for organic lawn care services, now is the time to get ahead with non-toxic lawn care 'know-how’. With support from The Long Island Sound Futures Fund and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Northeast Organic Farming Association's Organic Land Care Program (NOFA OLC) is offering a new 'Organic Lawn Care Certificate Course'. The one-day course ($80) is ideal for municipal and school groundskeepers, lawn care professionals and town committee members wanting an comprehensive understanding of effective non-toxic turf care approaches. The lessons cover: how pesticide and fertilizer runoff harms water quality; how to grow a beautiful lawn organically; and how to market organic services. The course also includes a newly published guide to organic lawn care, organic lawn signs and other marketing materials for those who have completed course.

Audubon Greenwich is pleased to host Alvaro Jaramillo, Senior Biologist at the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory, for a lively discussion about birder brains and how humans relate to birds. This talk is partly about what we understand about brain function and partly about how it allows us to identify birds; and this understanding helps one be more proficient in bird identification. Jaramillo is a sought-after keynote speaker and contributed chapters to The Sibley Guide to Bird Life and Behavior; wrote the Birds of Chile and New World Blackbirds: The Icterids; isa columnist for Bird Watcher’s Digest; and is an associate editor for North American Birds.
