Northern Saw-Whet Owl Banding

November 12, 2024 - Greenwich, CT, CT

Register

Join licensed owl bander Larry Fischer for a special nighttime program at the Greenwich Audubon Center to learn about and hopefully see the Northeast's smallest owl species, the Northern Saw-Whet Owl! This endearing but fierce predator leaves its breeding grounds in Canada and the Northern U.S. each fall to migrate through our region. Through the work of highly trained bird banders, studying these birds through banding them helps us not only understand their movements but most importantly helps us know how we can continue to conserve their habitats. Larry will explain the life history of these owls, what they eat and how they embark on these journeys each year.

If we are lucky, we will have a chance to see live Saw-Whet Owls being banded by Larry using federally licensed bird banding techniques to catch these birds in the field. Seeing owls will NOT be guaranteed, but if we do get a chance to catch any of these birds we will have the opportunity to observe how Larry measures and weighs the owls to learn their age, sex and other information that will help scientists learn more about these birds.

Space is strictly limited to 25 PARTICIPANTS and the majority of the program will be indoors. As we will be going outdoors for portions of the program attendees are encouraged to wear weather appropriate, warm clothing.

Larry will be checking his federally approved, bird-safe mist nets for owls each hour. Attendees do not need to stay for the entire four-hour duration but staying longer could increase your chances of seeing an owl.

IN THE EVENT OF RAIN, INCLEMENT WEATHER OR UNFAVORABLE WINDS FOR OWL MIGRATION THE PROGRAM WILL BE MOVED TO WED. NOVEMBER 13

Tickets MUST be purchased in advance through this online ticket sales page. There will be no ticket sales at the door the day of the program.
